Internet Advertising has reached a certain limit and Google experienced it recently. They’ve recorded a drop in the number of clicks on their banners displayed all across the web. Even if they say it’s because they’ve increased the quality of their ads, which means they’re more targeted, they have to face the reality: There are more “ad blind” people than 5-10 years ago when Internet Advertising all started.

“Ad Blind” is a term commonly used with advertisers and it means a person not seeing the ads on a website. These are usually computer literate persons. Nobody likes to click on an ad and with the average computer knowledge increasing, more people are aware of ads and just ignore them. This business is what we call Pay Per Click and is still widely used because of the successful Google Adsense program for website publishers. Google Adsense lets you put ads served by Google on your website and receive money for the clicks generated.
The future of Internet Advertising is nasty and we all start to feel it. Ever been on a website and saw a full page ad blocking you from going any further unless you click on “Continue to X.com”? Ever been on a website with audio ads? Ever been on a website with an ad following you everywhere on the screen? We’ll see that kind of things more often in the years to come because they have to find another way of getting the surfer’s attention.
I bet Google will try to keep everything as clean as possible and will try to avoid that kind of marketing but they’ll still have to put a little evilish touch.

Great article! I agreed that the advertise marketing is getting worse. Some websites have way too much popups, mouseover text ads, flash and audio.
